What Is Locktober: A Beginner’s Guide and Safety Notes
Aktie
BASIC CONCEPT OF LOCKTOBER
“Locktober” is an unofficial chastity challenge, similar to “No Nut November.”[1] It became popular in the BDSM community in the late 2010s. Like “No Nut November,” it asks people to avoid sexual release for one month. But Locktober usually uses a chastity cage to stop direct contact with the genitals. Since 2016, interest in searches for “Locktober” has continued to grow. Google Trends shows that participation in 2024 was almost twice that of previous years. The Daily Beast [2] reported that chastity groups on Telegram were also growing, and discussions about Locktober can be seen in chastity[3] sections on Reddit.

THE ORIGIN OF LOCKTOBER
The origin of “Locktober” is not clear, but it is believed to have started in the BDSM community, probably in the middle or later part of the 2010s. One of the earliest known mentions of Locktober was posted on September 30, 2017, by a Tumblr account called Edging.Spaces , which focused on orgasm control. Edging.Spaces reposted a post from their partner’s deleted Tumblr account, keephimcaged. That post introduced Locktober.
The idea was to put the penis in a chastity cage for one month. During this time, the person could not have an orgasm, while their partner could have orgasms. Many people use this activity to explore power exchange, test their own limits, build a closer relationship with another person, or enjoy abstinence as a sexual interest.
HOW LOCKTOBER WORKS
The main ritual of “Locktober” is wearing a chastity lock throughout October. It is usually a cage made of plastic, metal, or silicone that can prevent an erection. Some people lock themselves, while others let a partner, called a “Keyholder,” control when they can be released.
The goal and meaning can be different for each person. Some people join Locktober for the sexual excitement and pleasure of abstinence. Others see it as a lifestyle commitment or an act of giving themselves to a dominant/submissive relationship.
Common activities include:
- 24/7 chastity for 31 days
- Edging without orgasm
- Daily rituals or tasks assigned by a dominant
- Social media sharing or journal documentation
Community platforms can help participants track their progress, share photos, or communicate with their Keyholder.
PREPARING FOR LOCKTOBER
Be sure to test your cage ahead of time. Do not wait until October 1 to buy a cage. It is not realistic to think that you can buy one and immediately wear it for a whole month.
Give yourself some time to get used to it. Start with short periods of training and slowly get used to “Locktober.” If you miss the first day or first week because you did not test the equipment, that would be very bad, and you may have to order another one.
Make sure the equipment fits well, stays in place, and is the right size. It should not cause pain or rubbing. Wear it for at least a few hours, and preferably a full day, to make sure everything is okay.
Do not ignore signals from your body just to finish the challenge.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAGE
This is the most important part of the whole cage and also the part where safety problems can happen most easily. So, knowing how to measure and choose the right cage is very important if you want to complete Locktober.
First, you need to understand the important body measurements. The main measurements include the length from the top side of the penis to the tip of the penis when soft. This is the main measurement for choosing cage length.
You also need the circumference or diameter around the base of the genitals. This helps choose the base ring size and keeps the whole device in place.
Other measurements include how tight or loose the scrotum is and how high it hangs, penis circumference when soft and erect, total base circumference and length after an erection, the length and width of the glans, and, if you have a PA piercing, the distance between the piercing hole and the base.
These measurements can help you know if the cage fits well, if there is enough room for an erection, and if the tissue will be under pressure.
For actual measuring, a soft tailor's measuring tape is the easiest tool. You can also use a thin string and a ruler.
Most measurements should be taken when soft. But soft length can change a lot. It is recommended to measure for at least 3 days in a row, and preferably 7 days, 2–3 times each day. Then use the smallest measurement as the basic number.
Measuring is only the starting point. Every person's body shape and feelings are different. In the end, you still need to adjust the size by trying the cage. A size based only on numbers can sometimes be wrong.

WEARING TIPS
The cage length is usually the shortest soft length minus 10%–20%. The goal is for the glans to just touch the front when soft, with almost no empty space. This can reduce movement and rubbing.
The base ring should fit closely but should not be too tight. A common guide is that you should be able to easily put one index finger inside. You can also choose a slightly larger size based on the circumference around the base when erect.
Too tight can affect blood flow. Too loose can make it easier for the device to come off.
There are two ways to think about cage width. One is to fit closely to the soft penis to reduce rubbing. The other is to leave room for an erection to reduce pressure at night.
The space between the base ring and cage is usually less than 10 mm. It should stop the testicles from slipping out, but it should not press on the spermatic cord.
When putting it on, first put the base ring on one testicle at a time. Then put the penis into the cage and lock it.
You can use lubricant or stockings to help put it in place.
A device with the right size should not cause clear, lasting pain after you put it on. You should mainly feel a clear feeling of contact and fit.
You need to get used to it slowly, from 1 hour, to overnight, and then to several days.
MATERIAL AND GENERAL SUGGESTIONS
Among common materials, metal, resin, silicone, and other light materials are light in weight and have smooth inner walls. They have a low feeling during daily use and are suitable for long-term wear.
Metal, such as steel or titanium, has more weight and gives a stronger sense of ceremony, but it can also pull downward more easily.
For beginners, it is better to start with a light, open, and easy-to-clean design. First solve the problems of size and getting used to it. Then think about heavier or stricter designs.
During the whole process, any lasting pain, unusual color, numbness, or swelling means you should take it off and make an adjustment right away.
Safety is always more important than a “perfect fit.”

COMMON LOCKTOBER PROBLEMS
1. Skin Rubbing
Rubbing around the base ring is common. The area where the scrotum touches the perineum is especially likely to have problems.
A base ring that is too tight or too loose can both cause problems. If the base ring is too loose, it can move around. If the material is hard and does not give enough support, it can pull downward.
After sweating, the rubbing can become worse. Over time, this can cause red and swollen skin, broken skin, and, in serious cases, infection.
For mild rubbing, first make sure the size is correct. Then you can apply moisturizer several times a day and wait for the skin to get used to it.
Shea butter, Chamois cream for cycling, Redemption Tattoo Aftercare Ointment, Eucerin Advanced Repair Body Lotion, moisturizer, and can all be used for skin care and protection.
You can also put medical breathable tape on areas that rub often, add a thin foam pad, or cover the ring with a silicone sleeve to provide cushioning and protection.
Using a chastity strap to hold the cage upward can greatly reduce the downward pulling force caused by movement of the base ring on the perineum and scrotal skin. Many users say this can improve the problem very quickly.
If the problem does not improve after a long time and the pain is strong, it may mean that the base ring is too small or that its shape does not fit well.
Change to a larger size or a curved ergonomic base ring.
Note: Oils such as petroleum jelly, coconut oil, and shea butter can, over a long period of time, take away moisture from the skin. At the same time, less rubbing inside the cage can stop dead skin from coming off normally.

2. Swelling
With a new cage or a cage that is a little too tight, some tightness during the first few days can be a normal part of getting used to it.
But you should always watch the condition of your skin and unlock when needed.
Warning signs include swelling that keeps getting worse, skin becoming darker or purple, severe pain, numbness, shiny and tight skin, clear heat or pus, and difficulty urinating → unlock immediately.
You surely do not want a Locktober challenge to become a body problem that needs emergency care.
Besides general swelling, you also need to watch for skin or foreskin being pushed through the gaps at the front of the cage.
This is especially important for uncircumcised people. The foreskin or other loose skin may come through the cage gaps. During normal walking, it may be rubbed or pinched again and again by underwear or pants. This can cause redness, swelling, pain, and even skin damage.
If this happens often, you can consider a cage with a larger front opening or smaller gaps. At the same time, check whether the cage and base ring are the right size.
For uncircumcised people, some wearers pull the foreskin back behind the corona while putting on the cage. This can reduce the chance of skin coming through the front gaps.
But this is not suitable for everyone.
If the foreskin opening is tight, or if you have phimosis or partial phimosis, do not force the foreskin back.
If the foreskin is pulled behind the glans and cannot return to its normal position, and clear swelling begins, this may be paraphimosis[4] and needs immediate treatment.
If there is mild swelling, you can first reduce activity, let your body rest, and keep the area clean and dry.
If needed, you can use a short cold compress through a cloth. Do not let ice touch the skin directly.
If skin is caught in a cage gap, unlock first and let the tissue return to its natural position. Do not keep wearing it and keep trying to adjust it.
If swelling affects urination, causes clear pain or an unusual feeling, or does not improve after rest, especially if it lasts 24–48 hours, unlock and stop wearing the cage. Get medical care if needed.
If there is clear purple, blue, or white skin, numbness, severe pain, lasting swelling, difficulty urinating, or the foreskin cannot return to its normal position, do not wait and watch.
Stop wearing the cage immediately and seek medical help.

3. Ball Trapping
This problem may happen more easily in people whose testicles sit higher, whose scrotum contracts strongly, or whose testicles are relatively large.
The scrotum also naturally gets tighter or looser when the temperature changes. This may be more noticeable in cold conditions.
The size of the base ring is also very important.
If the base ring is too small, the testicles may have trouble passing through it, or they may get stuck after passing through.
If the base ring is too large or too loose, the testicles may slip out more easily during movement or changes in body condition.
If you often have this problem, you can consider a plastic/resin cage. Plastic/resin models typically come with 4 different base‑ring sizes, making it easier for you to find a proper fit.
Before wearing it, first let the scrotum relax fully. Then gently move the testicles downward. After making sure the position and size of the base ring are right, lock it.
If the testicles still slip out easily, you can consider using a piercing-based fixing method, a chastity strap, or other support methods.
Taking a warm shower before wearing it can also help the scrotum relax.
If the base ring is too small and there is purple skin, numbness, clear pain, swelling, or unusual skin color, unlock immediately and stop using it.
Choosing a base ring with an adjustable design can also give you more flexible size adjustment.
If these methods still do not solve the problem, you can consider a Shaft-Only Cage.
It does not have a base ring around the scrotum. This can reduce pressure from the base ring on the testicles and scrotum, and lower the chance of trapping and discomfort.

4. Tip Pressure
When wearing a chastity cage with the right size, sexual arousal should not cause pain.
When you are awake and locked in a cage, the erection is usually much less strong than during sleep. At most, you may feel a little discomfort.
For the rest of the time, you can hardly feel that it is there, and the comfort is very good.
The real pain can happen when you get an erection at night while wearing the chastity cage, or when you have a morning erection after wearing it overnight.
A natural erection pushes the penis forward. The tip presses against the front of the cage, causing clear discomfort or even pain. But this is normal.
You can try applying some lubricant before going to bed.
If you wake up at night because of pain, get up and go to the bathroom, then urinate. The combination of moving around and urinating can help reduce the discomfort.
If your chastity cage keeps you from sleeping, it means it is not suitable.
The ball gap may be too small, or your ring may be too small
A chastity cage should keep you comfortable 24x7.
It is recommended to choose a wider cage to leave more room for an erection and change to a larger base ring to reduce pressure from the ring.

5. Peeing
The experience of urinating can be very different with different cage designs. Keeping clean and hygienic is always important.
It is recommended to choose a design that allows the glans to naturally stay close to the front of the cage. This can help urine pass through the pee opening in a more focused way.
An open urethra opening can make urinating easier.
When urinating, try to aim at the urethra opening. Sitting or squatting can also reduce urine spray and leftover urine.
Keep cotton swabs with you so you can adjust the position when needed.
You can also put an absorbent pad under the cage ahead of time to reduce cleaning problems caused by drops of urine.
If these methods still do not let you urinate easily and comfortably, unlock.
The goal of Locktober is to challenge yourself, not to make yourself suffer pain or discomfort or affect normal body needs just to finish the challenge.
If you want to keep some of the Locktober experience, you can also choose a middle way: temporarily take off the cage but keep the base ring on.
This makes urinating and cleaning easier while keeping some of the feeling and ceremony of wearing it. It also avoids forcing yourself to keep wearing the cage because of urination problems.

KEEP CLEAN DURING LOCKTOBER
Hygiene is always more important than the idea of “never unlocking.” Unlocking for cleaning does not mean you failed the challenge.
The community agrees that “hygiene unlocks don’t count.”
Being unclean can cause bad smells, fungal infections, and even UTI (urinary tract infection). In serious cases, your skin may have major problems before October is even over. NNN may end with no skin left.
A healthy penis is always more important than saying, “I wore it for 31 days without taking it off.”
You and your Keyholder, if you have one, can agree that unlocking for cleaning does not count as breaking the rules.
Wash it, dry it, and lock it again right away. No playing during that time.
The correct way is to unlock regularly for a full cleaning.
You can make a cleaning plan based on your cage type, how much you sweat, how you urinate, and your skin condition.
For example, you can clean once a day or once every 2–3 days.
You can also take it off and wash it every day when you shower. Or you can set a fixed time, such as unlocking for 5–10 minutes every Sunday.
You can also do a deep cleaning every 2–3 days.
Make the cleaning plan based on your own situation.
The rules are decided by you and your Keyholder, or by yourself. There is no single standard.
Go slowly. Do not start by trying to wear it for 31 days without taking it off.

KEYHOLDER OR SELF-LOCKING?
What is the Keyholder mode?
Simply put, you give the cage key to another person to keep. This can be a real-life partner, a friend, or an online/remote Keyholder.
You cannot unlock whenever you want. The other person decides when and under what conditions you can unlock. This creates a real feeling of being controlled. You cannot take it off even when you want to. The feelings of shame, waiting, and obedience can become much stronger.
What is Self-locking?
You lock the cage yourself and keep the key yourself.
There is no outside supervision. You depend only on your own willpower.
To make it harder, people use many ways to “hide” the key: timed safes, apps such as Chaster/Emlalock that create random passwords, freezing the key in ice, mailing it to themselves, or putting the key in a combination lock box and purposely forgetting the password.
But remember: in an emergency, such as being stuck, serious redness and swelling, or signs of infection, you must be able to get the key right away.
If this is your first serious Locktober, or if you have not fully gotten used to the cage yet, such as the cleaning process, nighttime erections, or base ring rubbing, Self-locking is recommended.
The reason is simple: the problems beginners have most often are physical problems.
If you have the key yourself, you can deal with them right away. You will not get into trouble because you try to “be strong” and keep going.
After you can easily wear the cage continuously for 1–2 weeks and have no major problems with cleaning or your skin, you can think about giving the key to someone else.
If you have a long-term trusted partner in real life and both of you have talked about it seriously, you can try Keyholder directly.
If you do not, start with Self-locking or use an app to help. Do not rush to find a stranger online to be your Keyholder.

FINAL WORDS
Locktober is basically a voluntary chastity and power exchange challenge centered around a chastity cage. It started in the BDSM community and has grown into a ritual that many people use to feel control, explore their own limits, and build closer relationships.
Whether you choose to lock yourself or give the key to someone you trust, the main point is not to “force yourself to wear it for 31 days without taking it off.”
The main point is to truly enjoy the mental and physical experience while keeping it safe, clean, and comfortable.
From measuring correctly and choosing a cage, to trying it early and getting used to it, making a cleaning plan, dealing with common problems such as rubbing, swelling, and pressure at night, and setting clear rules for Keyholder or Self-locking, every step should be taken seriously.
A good fit, comfortable material, and good hygiene are much more important than something that “looks very strict.”
Any lasting pain, unusual color, numbness, or swelling from your body should be respected right away. Unlocking when necessary is never a failure.
Give yourself enough time to prepare. Slowly make the wearing periods longer, and make cleaning and checking your body a regular habit.
This way, you can feel the challenge during the whole month of October without making your health the price.
The people who truly complete Locktober are often not the people who ignore their bodies completely. They are the people who know how to find a balance between rules and safety.
May you choose the right cage, stay clean, enjoy the experience, and leave the challenge knowing more about your body and your desires.
Safety first. Enjoy the process.
Locktober, start when you are ready.
